SONGWRITING NOTES / MINI ESSAY
Sometimes I think it's better if lyrics are left to just speak for themselves, so I considered saying nothing about this one at all. But for those who google interviews with the artist, listen to commentaries, read the notes on genius lyrics, or generally just appreciate exposition: I'll try.
I came up with the chorus while walking to uni beneath a row of trees that had lost almost all their leaves, bare branches exposed as they twisted their way up and out towards the winter sky. It was messy and yet beautiful. I felt cold but the fresh air was exhilarating, especially after being crammed into a crowded tram. And having been a bit lost in my own head the whole day, the feeling of actually FEELING something else, and noticing the beauty in and around all of the stress and chaos of the city, was intoxicating. It's an impossible kind of thing to put into words, but these words came tumbling out of my head into the notes app on my phone anyway.
So what's it about? Twisted trees with naked branches. Days so cold you can taste it when you breathe in. Towering, snow-capped mountains. Fallen leaves. Forks of lightening that flash across an angry night sky. The hush from a blanket of fresh snow. Glimpses of something that never emerges into full view. It's about all and yet none of these things. It's about something I'm still trying to understand - the beauty in all this madness that is being fully alive.

LYRICS
Step back, they say
better to see that way
when it's mangled and twisted and tangled
too wild to be tamed
We're living in the trenches and the world looks grey
fighting just to scramble up to see the light of day
it gets messy down here
clouded by fear
| I see beauty in the madness
| perfection in the flaws
| there's harmony in chaos
| feel it all, live it all
| hear the story in the silence
| and marvel at the storm
| see the beauty in the madness oh
Take a step and another my friend
white cold air breathe it in
look around and see what can be found
outside of your skin
Even these bare branches intertwine towards the sky
and the clouds keep rolling though they don't know why
and our hearts keep beating
and our lungs keep breathing it in
| I see beauty in the madness
| perfection in the flaws
| there's harmony in chaos
| feel it all, live it all
| hear the story in the silence
| and marvel at the storm
| see the beauty in the madness, oh
| in it all
Wanna rule it, wanna tame it
or contain it, oh
try to fight it from inside it
it's impossible
wanna feel it, wanna taste it
like nothing else
Catch a glimpse in everything
never clear but always seen
delicate and fierce
far yet near us
wanna feel it, wanna taste it
like nothing else
Just beyond the horizon
just behind the grey-white veil
just above the highest peak
and just when all my words will fail
I can't describe it, or explain it
it's something else
(oh it's something else)
| I see beauty in the madness
| perfection in the flaws
| there's harmony in chaos
| feel it all, oh won't you live it all
| hear the story in the silence
| and marvel in the middle of the storm
| see the beauty in the madness, oh
| in it all, live it all
